Black pepper, a plant of the family piperaceae, is native to the Indian coast of Malabar. Its pungent smell, one of the earliest spices used by humans, is often associated with meat, especially beef, and is probably the most widely used spice nowadays. The fruits of black pepper are dark red and will contain a seed when ripe. When dried, the fruit becomes a 5-millimeter-diameter pepper nut. It is also used medically as a wind-repellent and to stimulate stomach secretion. Pepper is an important trade commodity between India and Europe, also is a medium of exchange.
